Social media in diverse countries
We have mainly read social media in educational perspectives for ten weeks and read articles, especially on social media in diverse countries such as Korea and Thailand this week. Even it was nice to read a Korean case this week because I was not interested in how people used social media when I was in Korea.
Preventive behavioral intentions of MERS and social media usage in South Korea (Yoo, Chio, & Park, 2016)
In terms of the MERS, I still clearly remember the urgent situation in which many people died from it, and there were not many people in hospitals because of the danger of contagion. Now that I have been studying social media usage, I could guess the benefits of social media in this urgent situation. This study found that there were effects between information behaviors through social media and preventive intention. It can be said that campaigns of public health with the benefits of the characteristics of social media can be helpful.
Social media usage in Thailand higher education (Seechaliao, 2014)
The author conducted a survey of social media usage to thirty-one faculty lecturers in Thailand. The result was not surprising that the most frequently used social media were YouTube, Facebook, and SlideShare. On the other hand, their perception of the effectiveness of social media usage in education was moderate. It means that they use social media often, but they are not convinced positive aspects of social media. Reflecting my produsage assignment, I was also used YouTube and Slideshare in the instructional design about teacher burnout. I will write this experience in another blog post, but you should consider the quality of the materials and purpose of social media usage even though you can easily access and use them.
Furthermore, I tried finding the characteristics of social media usage in Europe. As we can imagine, Facebook was the most popular social media, but the ranks of usage of other social media platforms were different except for the exclusive one, Facebook. For example, Instagram was ranked in second place in Germany, but Pinterest was the second rank in Europe. It means that preferences for platforms and the purpose of using social media may differ.
It is interesting to find differences and similarities of social media usage in various contexts and even more pleased that I can consider the topics in-depth through this eme6414 course!
