Self-Reflection of Social Media Usage
As a user of social media, I define myself as a wanderer in the social media world because I feel lost as I use social media. When I was the twenties, it was exciting to share information and my status. But as time goes by, I had felt tired from participating in social media. I guess the reason that I used social media might be for social activities.
I have mainly used a few social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. They have different features so I can choose platforms based on purposes. If I want to share my daily life with photos, I post the photos on Instagram with a short description, but when I have useful information in the academic field or urgent incidents I use Facebook. Recently, I made an account on Twitter for activities in my class, EME6414. I am still confused about how to use it and it has a little weird interface. But I will be familiar with it and finally find features in the near future.
Because of a lack of experiences for me to say about using social media actually, I searched current social media statistics and compared my knowledge about social media.
- 3.2 billion social media users worldwide, which equates to about 42% of the population. -- Wow, my mom and dad are behind from the number of social media users!
- Facebook is the most popular social media platform. -- Even they have some privacy issues, still, it is the most popular platform! Yes, I can admit it because I am a Facebook user!LOL
- 90.4% of Millennials, 77.5% of Generation X, and 48.2% of Baby Boomers are active social media users. --It is interesting that about 50% of Baby Boomers are active users. Although Korea has powerful technologies in terms of internet kinds of stuff, I think not so many baby boomers use social media in Korea. In the U.S., yes, I can say there are lots of people who use social media as baby boomers.
- Users spend an average of 2 hours and 22 minutes per day on social networks and messaging. -- We have to focus on the word, an average. I have seen that my previous students used facebook messenger instead of their phone message all the time! Also, I reflect myself checking recipes on Instagram and Youtube!
- 73% of marketers believe that social media marketing has been “somewhat effective” or “very effective” for their business. -- As a consumer, I can say that it is very effective. If social media use machine learning technologies on their platforms, they remember what I have clicked, and suggest everything I want so I don't need to use additional endeavors to search while using social media! This is one of the surprising technologies I have experienced these days!
- 54% of social browsers use social media to research products. -- No doubt!
- 71% of consumers who have had a positive experience with a brand on social media are likely to recommend the brand to their friends and family. -- In my case, my mom asked me how to use social media herself to see my daily life because I am far from my family members. I introduced her Facebook and helped make her account. The reason that I recommended Facebook was the most prevalent and easy to use for her.
- 49% of consumers depend on influencer recommendations on social media. -- Mm... I watch influencers'? creators'? reviewers'? contents sometimes. But I don't depend on their recommendations but compare a few recommendations if I have some to buy or study. But it is hard to deny that they have some power to persuade people.
- 500 million daily active Instagram stories are uploaded worldwide. -- Not me...
- 91% of all social media users access social channels via mobile devices. -- No doubt!

Through the current trends and self-reflection about social media usage, I could check how much I engage in social media in my daily life. I started writing this post with a thought of myself as a wanderer. But I redefined myself as a passive user. I have just used information distributed from other people in one way or share just simple information with my close friends. But, not to spend time uselessly and make time meaningful in social media, I should change my status from a passive user to an active prosumer in this opportunity!
Wow! Lots of amazing stats that you located and shared here. Great work and thank you for that!
ReplyDeleteIt is crazy how important social media can be to a business or organization these days!
I have to say that one of the biggest 'hints" i have heard from a marketing standpoint is to just post and be consistent to make sure to show your customers that you are there. It makes a business seem relevant and it slowly drips the marketing message to them keeping it right in front of them ever so slightly so when that 1 time comes that a person needs a product or service, the will remember the company who has consistently been in the background over a period of time. It is true for me as well. Although I do not read newsletters I receive in email, I am still impressed to this day when I receive them 1-2 or 3 years later and one day I may read them. One day I may need a service or product and reach out to them because they have shown me a consistent message over time.
