Unexpected Digital Detox Challenge

I took a digital detox challenge unintentionally from a summer allergy. I got attacked by unspecified pollens because this is the first summer for me being in Florida. My face started burning in one or two hours after I came out of my apartment. I visited a doctor at the wellness center, and he said that I had a sinus infection from pollens. The symptoms lasted over one week were gone after I took antibiotics. Now, I am thankfully recovered!

While I was struggling with the symptoms, I had no energy to do any social media activities and automatically had the digital detox time. I guess it was about a day and a half. I tried not to use social media this time on Thursday and Friday morning because I had to receive phone calls from my family and other important emails from school.

Actually, there are not many times to use social media with specific purposes, and I usually check news and find cooking recipes using social media. I put my phone in my bookshelf and did not touch and checked it once per hour. I thought this challenge might be easy and enjoyable. However, it was awkward being in silent not to check any information in the first a few hours. Also, I felt frustrated at first to ignore the notification, but as time went by, I got used to letting it go.

Because I had a fever all day, it was a little easier to let it go. Also, I could think more while lying in bed without having my phone and could sleep better. Furthermore, I could focus on my assignment and felt more productive…(I don’t know this is true or not, but I felt like that..!)

When I first started detoxing, I felt anxious and detached from the world, but after a day, I felt relaxed and organized. Even if I don't check the news, if I don't join somewhere on social media for a few days, it doesn't matter. I know that an anxious mind makes me using social media. However, social media use actually seems to be an unconscious action if not consciously controlled. Perhaps it's because I use social media to be connected with people, but I've also considered if managing digital usage is the competency that we need in the future for our mental health.
